A treatment plant includes four stages-

Stage 1: the first stage is known as primary treatment. It draws and settles out the solids from the wastewater. It flows through the screen and systematically flows to a chamber called a grit or sedimentation tank.

Stage 2: The second stage is known as secondary treatment. There are some useful bacteria and other small organisms that consume the waste of water and help it clean. There’s a process called an activated sludge which consumes the waste. Then it was purified again and settled using another sedimentation tank.

Stage 3: You can call it tertiary treatment. This stage helps to remove the additional pollutants. Such as nitrogen and phosphorus

Stage 4: the last stage is disinfection treatment. It kills 99% of harmful bacteria leftover in the water. It uses chlorine to do so.

Sludge and biosolids tend to be produced and discharged in a treatment plant. You can place the concentrated solids in a landfill or can be incinerated them. One can use the solids as a soil nutrient if necessary.
